George Saunders a transposé l’histoire dans le « bardo », cet espace-temps dont les bouddhistes pensent qu’il s’agit d’une étape entre la mort et la réincarnation, quand l’âme n’est pas connectée à un corps. Mais Saunders a transformé cet espace à sa manière, habité par des fantômes menacés d’y rester pour l’éternité.
