Margo est dans un train en direction d'un nouveau pensionnat lorsqu'elle bascule dans une autre dimension, passant du cœur de l'été irlandais au froid d'un hiver étranger, d'une journée de 24 heures à une journée qui commence et se termine en seulement six heures. D'un inconnu dans le train – un voyageur de commerce du nom de Moon – elle apprend que New Davia fait partie d'un monde marqué par des soulèvements, des interdictions de voyager et des scellements de mondes.
