Avril 1940, et la Grande-Bretagne est dans la tourmente. Le gouvernement de Chamberlain est chancelant, et une invasion allemande pourrait avoir lieu dans quelques semaines. Un corps, portant l’uniforme d’un capitaine de la Luftwaffe, est trouvé dans le parc de Trent - une maison seigneuriale et maintenant une prison pour loger des prisonniers de guerre allemands de haut niveau. Le véritable but de Trent Park, cependant, est le renseignement, recueilli secrètement auprès des prisonniers par des auditeurs secrets. Le matin après la découverte du corps, l’un des auditeurs disparaît, avec une arme du stand de tir. Horrifié par le fait que cela pourrait faire éclater au grand jour l’opération hautement confidentielle, l’homme disparu doit être retrouvé. Cue Harry Fox, un ancien MI5 Watcher, maintenant suspendu. Il est désespéré d’aider l’effort de guerre mais il a dépassé l’âge de la conscription. Ensuite, son ancien patron prend contact avec un emploi pour lui, afin de retrouver l’homme disparu. Mais, stipule-t-il, cela doit également impliquer l’ancienne associée de Harry, Stella Fry. Stella rentre du travail dans la panne de courant pour trouver une foule devant son appartement. On lui dit qu’une jeune femme dans le bâtiment a eu un accident mortel. La femme décédée s’appelle Stella Fry. Indignée, Stella soupçonne que c’est l’œuvre de son ancien ami, Harry Fox. Mais pourquoi diable irait-il aussi loin pour la contacter ?

April 1940, and Britain is in turmoil. Chamberlain's government is faltering, and a German invasion may be only weeks away. A body, wearing the uniform of a Luftwaffe captain, is found in the grounds of Trent Park - a stately home and now a prison to house high level German POWs. Trent Park's true purpose, however, is intelligence, gathered covertly from prisoners by secret listeners. The morning after the discovery of the body, one of the listeners goes missing, along with a gun from the firing range. Horrified that this could blow the highly confidential operation wide open, the missing man must be tracked down. Cue Harry Fox, a former MI5 Watcher, now suspended. He is desperate to assist the war effort but he's over the conscription age. Then his former boss gets in touch with a job for him, to track down the missing man. But, he stipulates, it must also involve Harry's former associate, Stella Fry. Stella returns home from work in the blackout to find a crowd outside her flat. She is told that a young woman in the building has had a fatal accident. The dead woman is called Stella Fry. Outraged, Stella suspects that this is the work of her erstwhile friend, Harry Fox. But why on earth would he go to such lengths to contact her?
