Gretel Fernsby est une femme tranquille menant une vie tranquille. Elle ne parle pas de son évasion d’Allemagne il y a soixante-dix ans ou des sombres années d’après-guerre en France avec sa mère. Surtout, elle ne parle pas de son père, le commandant d’un des camps de concentration nazis les plus notoires. Mais quand une jeune famille emménage dans l’appartement en dessous d’elle, Gretel ne peut s’empêcher de se lier d’amitié avec leur petit garçon, Henry, bien que sa présence évoque des souvenirs douloureux.
