Dans son célèbre roman social Les Buddenbrook Thomas Mann raconte l’histoire d’une famille de la haute bourgeoisie dans l’Allemagne du Nord au XIXe siècle. Le récit traite de quatre générations et se déroule sur quarante ans : au début, la famille de négociants est très respectée et prospère mais elle va connaître au fil du temps un important déclin. Bien des années après sa publication, l’auteur a reçu pour cet ouvrage en partie autobiographique le prix Nobel de littérature.

In his famous social novel Buddenbrooks, Thomas Mann tells the story of an upper-middle-class family in 19th-century Northern Germany. The narrative spans four generations and forty years: initially, the merchant family is highly respected and prosperous, but over time, they experience a significant decline. Many years after its publication, the author received the Nobel Prize in Literature for this partly autobiographical work.
