Un cadavre démembré est découvert dans la chambre forte d'une boutique d'orfèvrerie. La police pense d'abord qu'il s'agit de la dépouille d'un braqueur condamné, mais cette théorie ne fait pas l'unanimité. Decima Mullins, notamment, refuse d'y croire ; elle fait appel au détective privé Cormoran Strike, convaincue que le corps retrouvé dans le coffre est celui de son compagnon — le père de son nouveau-né — qui a disparu soudainement et mystérieusement. Plus Strike et son associée Robin Ellacott approfondissent l'enquête, plus celle-ci s'avère complexe et tortueuse. La boutique en question est loin d'être ordinaire : située à côté du siège de la Grande Loge unie d'Angleterre (le Freemasons' Hall), elle est spécialisée dans l'orfèvrerie maçonnique. Par ailleurs, il apparaît que, outre le braqueur et le compagnon de Decima, d'autres hommes portés disparus pourraient correspondre au profil du corps retrouvé dans la chambre forte. Alors que l'affaire devient de plus en plus périlleuse et inextricable, Strike est confronté à un autre dilemme. Robin semble de plus en plus attachée à son compagnon, le policier Ryan Murphy, mais l'envie de lui avouer ses propres sentiments se fait, pour Strike, plus impérieuse que jamais.

And in addition to the armed robber and Decima's boyfriend, it becomes clear that there are other missing men who could fit the profile of the body in the vault. As the case becomes ever more complicated and dangerous, Strike faces another quandary. Robin seems increasingly committed to her boyfriend, policeman Ryan Murphy, but the impulse to declare his own feelings for her is becoming stronger than ever.
